Phillip Park
William St Sydney
"Messenger spent his last years in modest circumstances. For a long time he lived on the top floor of the New South Wales Leagues Club in Phillip Street. In December 1955, a newspaper reporter discovered him raking leaves in Phillip Park in Sydney. 'The City Council always employs old-age pensioners for a week or so before Christmas so they can get a little extra money' the old footballer explained. He said his legs were giving him trouble. 'I think it's the old bruises coming back' - from 'The Grand Old Ground' by Philip Derriman.
