Peter Moore & Phil Gould

11-13 O'Connell St Parramatta

Despite winning a premiership as a 30-year-old rookie head coach at Canterbury in 1988, Phil 'Gus' Gould's time at the Bulldogs were already numbered. There had been talk for years that Bulldogs boss Peter 'Bullfrog' Moore had been preparing club great, and son-in-law Chris Anderson for the top job, even while Warren Ryan was still there. Before their premiership defence even began in 1989, a reserve grade trial match at Parramatta Stadium, and a quip from Gould to Moore, seemed to help Moore, much more than Gould in coming months.

Phil Gould in Alan Whiticker's 'The Terry Lamb Story':

"Early in 1989, our reserve grade side were beaten in a trial at Parramatta Park by sixty points. I turned to Peter Moore and said to him that there was not one of those players who could play first grade."

And...

"I was disappointed Chris had been made under-23's coach and it was obvious Peter Moore had intentions of bringing Chris up to first grade."
