The extremely vicious 'Cola Wars' between Coca-Cola and Pepsi in the 1980s and 1990s reached rugby league in 1994 at the Coca-Cola World Sevens at the SFS. According to reports of the time, both companies were keen to become naming rights of the premiership with Winfield finishing up at season's end.
Rugby League Week's Tony Durkin reported on the chaotic scenes as the Pepsi-sponsored Sea Eagles celebrated winning the final.
"The bitter rivalry reached ridiculous proportions when security guards stopped Manly players bringing cans of Pepsi onto the field during last Sunday's presentation and a Pepsi can was allegedly ripped from Cliff Lyons' hard as he approached the dais to receive the man of the match award."
The Sea Eagles and Pepsi got one back in a photo opportunity in front of the western grandstand with head coach and Immortal [who was also Australian coach at the time], Bob Fulton front and centre, with a can of Pepsi in his hand.
Location is current address of PepsiCo in Sydney.
