The struggling Cumberland club's 1908 season turned to a joke on July 25 when hosting North Sydney at Wentworth Park. In front of an official crowd of just 200, according to Rugby League Project. Minutes before kick-off, Cumberland told NSWRL officials they did not have 13 players to play the game. After discussions, North Sydney officials Paddy Boland and Herbert Odbert put their hands up and were allowed to play for Cumberland. The North Sydney Shoremen won 45-0 with four players scoring doubles.
