"Good old 'Rowdy' Shearer is responsible for one of our favourite great escapes. With Manly having axed popular skipper Paul 'Fatty' Vautin and struggling for wins in '89, CEO Doug Daley fronted the playing group to quell the growing unrest. Daley let rip with a good old-fashioned spray, letting the players know in no uncertain terms who was boss. "And anyone who doesn't like it can leave now," he said, as eyes lowered around the room. That's when Shearer piped up: "Actually, I wouldn't mind a move to Brisbane." Daley allegedly then said the offer had been withdrawn, in record time. It set the scene for an ugly stoush between Daley and Shearer that ended in court. Coach Graham Lowe eventually granted Shearer's wish and he headed north."
