George Little
126 Phillip St Sydney
A 1920's illustration from famous cartoonist George Little who covered some rugby league matches, including this one between Norths and Balmain, for Smith's Weekly magazine who operated from this location.
From Old Australian Pre-Decimal Comics Up To 1966 on Facebook:
"Little is reported travelling the USA after WWI, but from the early twenties until the early forties, he was working as an illustrator and cartoonist for publications in Sydney, including Smith's Weekly.
"He created 'Ossie' and text stories for Fatty Finn's Weekly [1934-1935], reported to have done comics for the Offset Printing Company (OPC), and provided cartoons for Associated Newspapers' Sunbeams comic section. He was editor and cartoonist for Quiz [Gardner Publications].
"Little was a founding member of the Society of Black and White Artists in 1924. His work is included in the first publication of the Society, the U.S.A. Fleet Souvenir, published in July 1925 to commemorate a visit of the US fleet to Sydney.
In 1926, Little spent two months travelling New South Wales, for a £100 bet, surviving solely on income from his art. His travels were widely reported at the time."
