It is a little known fact that legendary St George hooker Ian Walsh came down from the bush six years earlier than his contract with the Red V, agreeing to join Easts in 1956 [the year St George began their premiership run]. As described in 'A Centenary of Rugby League' by Ian Heads and David Middleton, Walsh was staying at Hotel Bondi when he was sent to a hospital for an operation on his kidney. He never played for Easts and returned to country footy for six more years.
