Barry 'Punchy' Nelson was a former Canterbury, Newtown and NSW prop who would go on to be secretary of the Bulldogs for two decades. Nelson was also a NSW detective for many years and was the man who discovered Mick Ryan playing park football on the Tweed border and got him to the Bulldogs in the 1970s. At the time, Nelson was working in the NSW Armed Holdups Squad and was on assignment on the Gold Coast.
