Former school of Immortal Ron Coote. Known as 'The Prince of Locks', behind 'The King of Locks', Johnny Raper. By 1971, Coote was a legend of the Rabbitohs club and was a try scorer in the the grand final victory over Graeme Langlands' St George. In 1971 pre-season, Coote [Australia's winning World Cup skipper] requested an upgrade to his contract, from $4000 sign-on to $8000. The Rabbitohs, said no. Coote sat out the start of the season. The Rabbits finished the season second behind Manly but outlasted the Dragons in the big one, 16-10. After 148 games, it was Coote's last for Souths. In December, the High Court confirmed NSWRL's transfer system was a "unreasonable restraint of trade". Coote immediately left for Easts, where his father Jack won two premierships, for a larger contract befitting the Australian captain.
