Death of Veronica Monty
271 Pacific Hwy North Sydney
In 1955 barmaid Veronica Monty finished her shift at the Union Hotel, went back to her room at the hotel and committed suicide using the owner's gun. A few years earlier, Monty was part of one of Sydney's biggest sporting scandals which included her son-in-law, Kangaroos and Balmain outside back, Bobby Lulham.
Lulham collapsed two days after a game at Leichhardt and was sent to hospital where he was told he had consumed rat poison in a drink. His mother-in-law was charged and it was revealed the pair were having an affair. Monty told police the poison was, in fact, for her and not Lulham.
